Category: Crown Reduction

The client contacted us after branches from a mature oak began overhanging a neighbouring conservatory roof. We assessed the tree, agreed a reduction plan with the client, and carried out the work using rigging ropes to lower cut sections safely rather than dropping them.

The crown was reduced by roughly 2 metres on the affected side, two crossing limbs were removed to reduce future rubbing damage, and the canopy was thinned by about 15% to improve light penetration to the lawn beneath. All arisings were chipped on site and removed the same day.

Category: Hedge Shaping

A leylandii boundary hedge running around 18 metres long had grown unevenly, with sections reaching over 3 metres in places and leaning towards the driveway. The client wanted a tidy, uniform finish without losing too much screening.

We set up string lines and levels along the full run, then trimmed the hedge down to a consistent 2.2 metres with squared sides. Cuttings were collected and taken away, and the driveway was swept clear before we left.

Category: Fruit Tree Care

Three fruit trees, two apple and one pear, had not been pruned for at least three seasons and were carrying a lot of thin, crowded growth in the centre of the canopy. Fruit from the previous autumn had been noticeably smaller than in earlier years.

Working during the dormant winter period, we opened up the centre of each tree to improve airflow, removed dead and crossing branches, and cut back the previous year's growth on the main fruiting branches to encourage stronger spurs for the coming season.

Category: Storm Damage

Following high winds overnight, a large limb on a silver birch had split partway and was left hanging above a resident's parked car. The client called us the following morning and we arranged a same-day visit given the risk involved.

We removed the hanging limb in sections to keep it under control, cleaned up the torn wound edge to a smooth cut, and identified and removed a second weak fork nearby that showed early signs of splitting. The area was cleared of debris before we left.

Category: Shrub Maintenance

A front garden border of box and viburnum shrubs, planted around three years earlier, had grown out of shape after a couple of seasons without attention. Some shrubs had bare patches in the centre from lack of light.

We cut each shrub back into a rounded form appropriate to its species, removed dead and weak stems from the interior to let light back in, and raked and bagged all cuttings from the bed. The client was left with a set of care notes for the next trim.
